There are many different ways to produce oil. We are reaching peak oil and there will be a depression so there needs to be other ways to produce it since our economy is based on oil. You can basically refine oil, use coal, tar sands, oil shale, uranium, and hydrogen. Coal can be used because it is less expensive per unit of energy. It is bad because it causes killer smog, acid rain, atmospheric carbon dioxide, mercury pollution, acid mine drainage, and a choice between hazardous underground mines and surface-disturbing open-pit mines. Tar sands come from the products of oil, by both natural and artificial processing. Oil shale is a immature source rock for petroleum, but one that has never been hot enough to enter the oil window. There is a reason to try this method: In round numbers, one ton of good oil shale will generate one barrel of oil. At $25 per barrel of oil, that's $25 per ton of rock. Generating electricity form uranium does not add carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. To the extent that nuclear facilities are someday accepted, we have the uranium. We have an existing body of engineering experience. Hydrogen is not a fuel that comes from the earth. However it has been widely discussed as a cure for the world's energy problems. Using electricity to convert water into hydrogen and oxygen. Oil can be brought straight up from the ground-the most common way. It can also be extraced from ';oil sands'; like those found in Alberta, or chemically formed from coal deposits. Refining refers to the process by which mixed hydrocarbons (such as those from crude oil) are separated into more purified hydrocarbons. Thus, crude oil can be separated into highly volatile gasoline, diesel, less volatile kerosene, down to oils for lubrication and greases...all from the same crude oil.
