Why is there always a chimney thing on fire in oil refining places??

or at least i presume they are oil refineries, they do something with oil!

theres always a very hight chimney thats on fire!!! why?Why is there always a chimney thing on fire in oil refining places??
These are called Flare Stacks.

In refineries, they burn off excess gasses from pressure relief valves to protect refinery equipment. If the pressure is normal in the system, they are not burning.

They can also be used to burn off waste gas, but this has been extremely limited in the last few decades due to the pollution. Now days, waste gas is normally stored and sold by highly dilluting it into the natural gas supply.

Burning off excess natural gas.
They burn off the gasses don't they??
Flares are used to burn off the excess gases from the chemical processes. Oil refineries and chemical plants both have them. If these flares weren't there, we would have large environmental impacts due to the release of hydrocarbons. There are also safety impacts. You wouldn't want large quantities of flammable vapors building up in the area.

Safety valves are connected to flares but they are not always the only reason a flare is constructed.
This is where they flare off some of the gas that is separated from the oil. The rest of gas is transported (piped) to another refinery for processing.
theses are not chimenies

they are used to burn gases to avoid explosions
To burn residual gases.
Yep - burning gasses during the refining process to make petrol, diesel ETC
Burning off the gasses produced during the refining process. Burning the gasses means they are less pollutant than if just evacuated.
Oil refineries separate different hydrocarbons from crude oil. At the top, only the small hydrocarbons are being released (eg. methane). These are pollutants, so they burn them in an effort to reduce the amount of pollution.
Yes your right it is at oil refineries.

It's to burn off the natural gas released during extraction and refining. - You'll also see them on oil rigs. It reduces the harm done to the environment by those gasses and stops the chances of the place going kablooie!
burning off excessive and dangerous gasses.it also indicates to a certain extent as to what oil pressure is coming up from below ground
