crude oil is a mishmash of hydrocarbons, from methane which has 1 carbon and is a gas, all the way up to dense, solid ones that have 70 or more carbon atoms. That is why crude oil needs to be refined, to seperate out these molecules into different groups.





Gasoline is composed of hydrocarbons with 5 to 12 carbon atoms, which are light volatile liquids.





So, not all of the crude oil ends up as gasoline. I think on average it's just under half.





So about 20 gallons of gasoline per 42 gallon barrel of crude oil.

as for the cost of making it I don't really know. As a guess, I would say that about 60%-70% of the price you pay for a gallon of gas goes towards the cost of producing it. The rest is taxes and profit.


That's a guess though. Plus it obviously varies a lot because when the price of gasoline doubles in the span of a year the actual cost of producing that gas hasn't changed nearly that much. I would be interested to know how much it actually costs the oil companies to produce a gallon of gas.

That adds up to more than 42 gallons because of something called ';refinery gain'; - the processing and chemical changes increase the volume.





It is not possible to give the cost to refine a barrel of oil. The price of oil keeps changing daily and the oil companies have to pay different prices each time they buy oil so the refining cost would keep changing depending on this daily price.
