How much of the oil that's refined in Texas is kept here in the U.S.?

This question came from a discussion my dad and I had at a breakfast buffet this morning.

I know that we get our oil from the Saudis but how much of the oil do we get to keep that comes from places like Texas or Alaska (besides anybody from OPEC)?

No personal biases, please.

This question is under Social Sciences %26gt; Economics because I'm not sure where else it could go.How much of the oil that's refined in Texas is kept here in the U.S.?
Nearly all of it, I would expect. US capacity accounts for less than half of its consumption so there is very little outflow. While the market does something to disguise the origin of oil at the time of purchase, there's really no incentive for someone to take a tanker of oil from the US to anywhere else.

The US actually gets most of its imported oil from Canada and Mexico (non OPEC) with the Saudis coming in forth or fifth in the ranking. How much of the oil that's refined in Texas is kept here in the U.S.?
Most of the oil from alaska used to go to japan, as the japanese do not deal well with the arab nations.

that was a known statistic for years, not sure about 2008 though. Report Abuse

Oil is traded worldwide like money. If you send $100 thru western union from NY to someone in LA for example it doesnt mean that he/she will receive the same $100 bill you deposited.

In the case of oil the nearest ship carrying oil will unload regardless of source. So Texas oil might end up in Chicago and Venezuelan oil in Texas. Oil that perhaps was bought from the Saudis.
