Refined linseed oil is a medium that is used with traditional oil paints. Sometimes colors from the tubes can be stiff and are hard to work with. That is when linseed comes into to use. Adding just a bit of the linseed oil to the tube colors makes the paint flow better. It extends the life of the paint, keeping it wet for a short while but it is not the best for preventing the oil colors from drying too quickly. There are other mediums for that. If you have ever noticed, linseed comes in different variations. There is plain old linseed oil, then there is refined linseed oil, then there is cold pressed linseed oil, and stand oil etc. Refined linseed oil is perhaps the best variant to use as it does not cause oil paints to yellow over time.
