Would a petition drive directed to congressmen get them to press oil companies into refining more oil into gas

oil companies are creating a low supply of gasoline by not refining nearly as much oil as they have in the past. I believe we as consumers and voters should pressure our elected officials to act on our behalf, to return gas prices to more reasonable levels.Would a petition drive directed to congressmen get them to press oil companies into refining more oil into gas
Our government can't technically make a company do anything unless it violated the law, free market society and all. If they are doing it on purpose to gouge prices then we can step in.Would a petition drive directed to congressmen get them to press oil companies into refining more oil into gas
Who do you think put those morons in D.C. into office? It certainly wasn't the voters. The oil companies have the strongest and most influential lobbies in Washington.
The real drivers behind the current situation where petroleum products and other energy sources are skyrocketing out of control can be attributed primarily to our continuing excessive dependence on petroleum imports from OPEC.

Since 1974, when we experienced severe petroleum product shortages because of the Arab oil embargo against Israel reinforced by the formation of OPEC following member country expropriation of OILCO properties by national governments. Anyone in the upstrean side of the oil business , in Exploration and Production knows that all OPEC countries had oil reserves that were mercilessly exploited by bullying OIlco's for profit with little benefit accruing to the populations of the exporting countries they operated in. The has been a falure by domestic car manufacturing companies who in cahooys with the oil industry made no attempt on a voluntary basis to improve the energy efficiency of our transportation vehicles--trucks and cars alike. There was also the failure to reduce imports through behavioral changes that would alter/reduce the way we use energy while at home, at work, and at play. The things we did back then under Nixon and Carter need to be done in earnest now to reduce oil imports and CO2 emissions contributing to adverse global climate changes Conservation, recycling and reuse activities are the easiest ways to alter our energy consumption patterns. Behavioral changes and technological improvements leading to increased energy efficiency will reduce energy demand across the board. Sadly, there is no quick fixes to the situation--esp ones imposed by the government on its citizenry. TWH 05222007
Very good idea and worth trying I shall call my elected official on Monday. Thanks for your idea.
So you want de-regulation of the telephone companies, and then the power companies. But, now you want government regulation of the oil companies? You could try using alternative methods of transportation in order to cut usage. Or, you could just start petitioning china and india to stop buying automobiles like America does.
